Last summer I got really taken by the idea of learning CSS and building a website or at least playing around with my DW layout, but I quickly realized that I liked the idea of doing this stuff more than actually doing it. Anyway, this is a community for people who like tinkering with DW layouts and styles and stuff. Mostly seems like people asking how to do certain stuff and people trying to help them figure it out. Nice!

anythingdrabble

I really love writing drabbles...it's a fun challenge, and good editing practice. I like the process of taking a little idea for a scene or a moment or a feeling, letting myself explore it pretty freely, and then whittling it down to this very tight and specific word count. And drabbles are some of my favorite things to read...I love seeing the creative ways people work within the form. There are a few drabble communities out there, but somehow I don't think I'd ever seen this one before. Anyway, it's pretty straightforward: a weekly prompt for drabbles and drabble variations in any fandom. On a quick scroll through, I saw a good variety of fandoms represented, including some pretty small ones I think, along with some original poetry and fiction. Cool!

Yay! I was happy to land on this one today (after a few false starts). I'm a member of this community, and it's always a treat when a new post pops up on my Reading page. This is a community where people share music. It can be hard to find new music, or music in unfamiliar genres etc., so I'm grateful for the people who share things here and introduce me to stuff that otherwise probably wouldn't come across my radar. I feel like a lot of the more recent posts have been kinda anime/video game-adjacent, which is cool but not really my thing, but there are tags for lots of different genres too.

This is a big community that looks very cool and helpful. Its purpose seems to be offering support and encouragement for fanfic writers via, among other things it seems, daily check-ins in which members can post about any progress they've made on their WIPs. As I'm currently plugging away at a long (for me) fic project, I feel like this is something I'd probably benefit from. It also looks like community members volunteer to host these check-in posts, which is cool.

I kinda struck out a few times before landing on today's Random Community (got a couple HP-related communities, which I don't really want to highlight, something in Russian, a closed RP community, and a few archives of individuals' fic, which, while cool, aren't really what I've been trying to promote here), but after a few more tries I found...

This is a community dedicated to all things magical girl-related. Interestingly, according to the Intro/FAQ post, there used to be another community of the same name, but "the original was deleted and purged by its moderator, for reasons unknown, and all content was lost." Whoa! Anyway, not really my thing, but on a quick skim through I saw some fic, news, discussion posts, links to meta articles, etc. I like stumbling on communities with that kind of range of content.

So yesterday I wrote about icons, and today I've stumbled on a community dedicated to another aspect of DW I rarely pay much attention to: mood themes. As the title suggests, this is a community dedicated to the project of creating custom mood themes. Some of the moods seem really challenging, like "Indescribable," and it was cool skimming through and seeing how different people chose images to represent them.

Oh, and also, I guess you need a paid account to use a custom mood theme...but apparently, "any member of this community who completes a set of 18 images for a custom mood theme will get one month's worth of paid time or equivalent in Dreamwidth points." More details here if you're interested!

So I only have this one icon, and it's the only one I've ever had. It's from a little comic I made for my partner. I like it, and I kinda like that it's my one and only icon. But I also get a kick out of seeing the different ways people use icons on here, and some of them are really nice-looking!

I don't think I really give icons the consideration they deserve; I suspect that a lot of thought and care goes into making them! So it was cool to stumble upon this community, which is entirely dedicated to showcasing and praising icons. Lots of cool stuff to look at!

I'm actually a member of this one! This is a community affiliated with

rainbowfic, a really cool community for original fiction writers. Over at

rainbowlists, there are *tons* of prompts, grouped in batches according to colors, art styles, and art supplies...but the prompts don't really have anything to do with the colors/styles/supplies, if that makes sense. It's all explained in much more details at Rainbow Lists. Anyway, Rainbow Lounge is a community for games and challenges and whatnot for the people in the Rainbow Fic community. I haven't actually done anything in this community yet, come to think of it, but I'll reiterate that Rainbow Fic is really cool. They've been around since 2011, and there are some really well-developed worlds and stories that have grown here, and I've gotten some nice comments from some readers as I've begun fleshing out a world/story of my own there.

A community dedicated to the AMC adaptation of Interview with the Vampire. I've never read the book or seen the show so don't have much to say, but this looks like a fun community with a good sense of humor (the first "rule" on the stickied admin post is "Bring your shitposts"). On a quick skim through, I saw a WIP post, some fanart, a promo video, some recs, some icons, an Entertainment Weekly interview...all sorts of stuff! Seems like a pretty happening place!

I don't speak French, so take whatever I write here with a grain of salt, but this appears to be a community for a French-language fic exchange, focused on works that are somewhat "obscure" in French-language fandom, and what looks like a bunch of French-language canons that maybe don't have a lot of fics written about them, in French or otherwise. It looks like sign-ups are still open if any of this piques your interest! Very cool, and makes me curious about other similar events promoting works in other non-English languages.

It looks like they do a poll to choose each month's book, divide the books up into four chunks, and have discussion posts on weekends. That seems like a cool way to do a book club on here, actually...makes me wonder if there are any communities doing something similar!

Opt-ins

As long as you keep my DNWs in mind and respect the rules of the event, please don't worry too much about how you interpret my request. But just in case, here is a pretty exhaustive list of opt-ins!

I don’t care about sticking to the specific canon tag I requested. Feel free to mix elements from other adaptations, base yourself on the book only, use fannon, or whatever else.

Any rating is welcome, for both violence and sex.

Alluding to characters rather than drawing them is fine, I would consider that a valid fill of my requests. Similarly, characters in a slash ("/") relationship do not have to be kissing, having sex, etc, for it to count. As long as there's nothing that actively goes against that interpretation, I will recontextualize based on the tags, summary, etc.

I’m very into experimental or non-traditional formats, please only worry about what the exchange will let you do, not what I wouldn’t want to opt in to!

I’d be delighted by a gift inspired by or based on one of my own works! My blanket permission statement basically boils down to go wild as long as you make sure any other creators involved are okay with it. However, if you create something based on a fic I podficced, and not the podfic itself, then please do not use the inspired-by function to link your work to my podfic. The difference can be hard to measure, but in general you can ask yourself: are you inspired by the parts I had control over, like the acting choices, editing, freetalk, cover art style, etc? Or are you inspired by the story itself?

I'm also open to receiving gifts based on your own or other people's stuff, as long as the gift can stand on its own, without me having to check out the work that inspired it. This can be done through a note summarizing the context, or even just the tags or summary if they're informational enough.

Here are some of the things I like most in art and fanworks in general. You can treat them as extra prompts!

Non-traditional formats

I love non-traditional formats. I just think they’re neat and I want to explore all the possibilities. As long as it's allowed by the exchange, go for it! A few examples below.

“Low" effort works: uninked sketches, simplified art styles, diagrammatic/iconic representations, …

Playing around with media: social media elements, fancy html/css coding, pixelart, animations, …

High concept works: abstract styles, calligraphy, …

In-universe content: documents, media and social media, recipes or instructions whether disguised as fiction or not,… I particularly love to see in-universe fandom content! Fake merch, ads, fanart, …

Special mention to interactive or usable content, anything that is printable or playable or usable in whatever way will be an immediate hit.

Things that were a personal challenge for you

That format exploration extends to simply trying new things! Trying out a new medium or a new way to do things, mixing techniques, taking a gamble, ... I will appreciate the attempt even if the results don't meet all your expectations.

If you want to take it literally, I do like the idea of a personal challenge. Set your own goal and try to reach it! It can be silly, like drawing a doodle with only circles, or serious, like working on it a little bit every day, or just personal, like using those brand-new crayons you were gifted years ago.

Strong, coherent styles or inspirations

I love works with strong, coherent styles or inspirations. This could mean a lot of different things, and does not presume any skill level or difficulty! Once again, as long as it fits the rules of the exchange, you're good.

A few examples: a meme, a recipe blog picture, a pinup calendar spread, an xkcd comic, a fake romance book cover, impressionism, gothic architecture, sketching studies, a children's illustrated storybook, infomercials, …

I'll love all of these even more if you include some information on what/why/how you made a work. I’m curious! Timelapses, concept sketches, research notes, … This is extra extra optional.

Casual intimacy, domesticity

I like cozy scenes, lighthearted group shenanigans, everyday mundanity, art pieces that evoke a bright or warm mood.

Hugging really tight, cuddling or puppy piles, hand holding, forehead or cheek kisses, … I love to see the physicality of it, and also it just makes me melt.

My smut likes kind of extend from that: an emphasis on pleasure and sensations, on bodies, overstimulation, solo sex, …

Telling a story through art

I love art that builds a story whether it's the aftermath, the setup, or whatever. Feel free to use the tags, summary, dialogue, etc! I do count them as part of it.

A few examples: the contents of someone's bag. Who are they? Is it what they always have on them, or for a special occasion? What does each item say about them and the situation? A room. Who is usually in it? What do they use it for? Is it set up for a specific thing, are there traces of what recently happened, does it reveal any habits or character traits? A vignette of the setup, or the aftermath. First meeting or unforeseen event? Signs of what happened, of how the characters felt? Comics of whatever length. Humourous, surprising, or anything else.

How would you encapsulate the premise of a whole story or essay in a single illustration? Meta disguised as in-universe documents, concept art for AUs and canon divergences, annotated sketches…

Varied bodies and faces

While I’m fine with sticking to your own style or to canon’s, I also love more realistic ranges of variation! In skin color, body shape and age, but also just people not being perfect. Fat rolls, wrinkles, strong noses, bad posture, clothes that don’t fit or don’t flatter, expressive grimaces, …

365 Fresh - Triple H (Music Video)

This is a 5 minutes music video in which three strangers, each fleeing from their own problems, find themselves with a stolen car full of cash and go on a road trip/bender.

Hui is in trouble with a gang, Hyuna kills a guy who was trying to rape her, E'Dawn has mental health and potentially substance abuse issues and is trying to kill himself. There's drinking, smoking, and implied sex (Hyuna and E'Dawn, but at one point they all wake up in the same bed, great OT3 vibes!) The police catches up to them and they jump off the expressway together.

In real life, Triple H was a somewhat short lived project group featuring Hyuna, her secret boyfriend E'Dawn and his group leader and friend Hui. Lots of stuff happened since then. If you know (or want to learn) about it, feel free to take inspiration from it, but it's not required.

You can download and play the game on PC or mobile, or you can watch a few walkthroughs on Youtube.

Don't worry about the special roles, the core of it is "werewolves game but in space": one or more imposters are hiding among a spacecrew. While the crewmates are busy fixing their ship/etc, the imposters are sneaking around, sabotaging stuff and killing crewmates. The crewmates can vote to eject people they suspect of being an imposter into space. The crewmates win if they get rid of all the imposters or fix everything there is to fix, the imposters win if they manage to kill enough crewmates or induce a critical failure. Players who get killed turn into ghosts, with limited possible interactions.

I’m fine with the canonical maps and gimmicks, I’m also fine with just using the premise! As long as at one point there is or was a crew of some kind and an alien hidden among them, it fits.

KinnPorsche: The Series (TV)

Here is a primer from back when the show was airing. How they summarize it: "KinnPorsche is a [now finished airing] Thai BL and it is THE sexy mafia AU. Second son (and heir) of the mob Kinn falls in love with disaster bodyguard and casual streetfighter Porsche and many sexy gun fights, horny gazes, and deep emotional pangs ensue.” Content notes for sex, violence, and some consent issues.

On top of Kinn and Porsche, there are two side couples. Vegas, Kinn’s cousin, fan of torture and full of daddy issues, kidnaps and bonds with Pete, a main family bodygard who also has daddy issues. Chay, Porsche’s cute little brother, gets to meet his favorite singer Kim, except Kim is actually Kinn’s youngest brother. Very different vibes to all three pairings!

I've only read the webcomic (and fic and a few wikia articles), but please don't worry about spoilers! I can rely on context clues or look it up.

Portals to dungeons full of monsters start to appear in our world, and some people awaken abilities that allow them to fight those monsters, setting up guilds to raid dungeons and a whole economy around dungeon and monster materials. Han Yoojin's brother, Yoohyun, who he basically raised, awakens as a powerful S-rank and seemingly leaves him behind to a miserable life as an F-rank hunter. Except that when something goes wrong in a dungeon, Yoohyun sacrifices himself to save Yoojin! Granted a wish by defeating the dungeon, Yoojin decides to go back to the past, reconcile with Yoohyun, and live a quieter life. Then he realises that he now has the ability to help others reach better skills and ranks, starts collecting S-rank hunters and raising baby monsters while still F-rank himself, and gets embroiled in a plan to save the universe.

What I like about it: humor and angst, found family, wish-fulfillment without being a power fantasy

Debut or Die is a webcomic/webnovel in which a random guy has to become an idol because of a transmigration system. It's rooted in Korean fan culture (lots of social media elements, recurring fan characters, ...), the characters are endearing, and I was surprised how many jokes/one-off mentions grabbed my attention as potential fanwork fodder.

Here are an unofficial site for the webcomic, the official webcomic and the official webnovel. Annoyingly, tapas requires an account and only gives you one free webcomic chapter per day and one free webnovel chapter every 3 hours. I haven't managed to find any other translation of the novel online, let me know if you do?

Little mushroom is a finished (web)novel with an unfinished (web)comic adaptation. You can find various translations online, here are a few: comic, novel (1, 2 and 3).

I have only read the comic so I'm basing my pitch on that, but I'm 100% ok with content from the novel! I can parse context clues or look it up, and I’ve already spoiled myself for a lot of it.

Do you like depressing but realistically human apocalypse lore, dystopian moral dilemmas and crisis management, short glimpses of complex characters, what it means to be human or monster or something else altogether, disease outbreaks on steroids, non-human protagonists, mushrooms, maybe kind of mpreg kind of not (novel only)? This is a somewhat typical uni love triangle with a side of intrigue, but the characters are earnest and well-intentioned in a way that I found very endearing, including in how the conflicts were handled. And there are lots of elements to latch onto!

Liu, the main character, got bullied a lot for her physical appearance. Between high school and university, she gets plastic surgery and now fits beauty standards to a T. Faye is the popular queen bee of the university. She's sweet, she's pretty, she's basically perfect, except actually, she's not. Liu gets a girlcrush on her (platonic in the show but come on). Guy is the popular, awkward, earnest love interest who went to the same high school as Liu. Saint is the new neighbor who teases Liu (and Guy) and falls in love with her.

Quick content warnings for someone being blackmailed into a fake relationship, cyberbullying, stalking (including a chase at night).

Yeah, this is a community in which people rec fanart! I've never made fanart (well, except when I was a kid), and it's not something I've ever really sought out...though I can see the appeal. Glancing through the first few dozen entries, I saw a lot of Heated Rivalry and BTS stuff, but there are tags for a pretty wide range of other fandoms too. I got excited to see a bunch of posts for Sense8 fanart, but sadly a lot of the links are dead...I got a kick out of this one though!
